Yamaha RBX-260-F Fretless
Just finished work on my RBX-260 fretless. Stripped finish, wet-sanded and put 10 hand-rubbed coats of tung oil. A lot of time and work involved, but well worth it! Installed an old Ivory DiMarzio Model P pickup with adjustable pole pieces and DPDT mini-switch for dual sound option and RotoSound black nylon strings. What a difference! Dang, now I want to tear something else up. Will get better pics up tomorrow.

Very nice! How was it doing the oil finish? I am looking into doing a tung oil or tru oil finish on a Strat body I'm building.

Other than time consuming, not bad. On this one the finish had been worn through in places so the wood had dried out considerably in those locations. That's why it took the 10 coats to finally get an even finish. I think overall I like it better than spraying and came out smooth as glass.

Great. I've been looking into dying the wood before doing the oil. I'm using a maple neck an an alder body. I'd like to darken the body a little.

Should be nice. Do you use stain or an actual dye. I have thinking about trying a natural dye of some sort and see what happens. Might try it on one of Robert's V kits.

Looks awesome!

I've always been a fan of oil/shellac finishes. My custom AJL Jazzmaster is finished in shellac, much like violions are. It sings like a beauty and there's were little in the way of the vibration.

I'm thinking I'd go with a dye first and then the rubbed oil over that. I don't think there would be an adverse reaction. What are your thoughts? I just got my body today. I need to route the pickup spaces a little bigger for the wide range pickups and do some sanding. And more sanding. And more sanding.

The V idea sounds cool. I love Vs. Just wish they werent so uncomfortable to play sitting.

I wish I could get a finish like a well used violin. Jazzmaster sounds cool!

I agree; and let it dry 24 hrs before starting the oil. I know, sometimes I feel like Mr. Sandman. Whne I did the multiple coats of oil I gave it 48 hr to dry before adding another coat, just to be sure.

Know what you mean about the V's. They need like a a hook bracket on the bottom to catch on your right leg and keep thm in place...I'll work on that.
